Description: F, 396 pp.; The Modern Library Random House copyright edition 1957; Gustave Flaubert's first and greatest novel was serialized in Revue de Paris between Oct. 1, 1856 and Dec. 15, 1856 resulting in the local prosecuters charging Flaubert with obscenity. The trail followed in 1857 whereas Flaubert was aquitted on Feb. 7, 1857. The trail gained notoriety for the author and his novel. Madame Bovary was published in two volumes in April 1857 and became an immediate best seller. It is considered the first modern novel filled with material wants and aldultrous affairs. This modern library edition is bound in reddish-brown cloth with logo embossed on front board upper right corner; gold lettering of title, author, and Modern Library highlight the upper spine; F dj protected by mylar. Gustave Flaubert was born on Dec. 12, 1821 in Rouen, France and died on May 8, 1880 in Rouen France.
