Random Events repeating itself… History

Random Events repeating itself… History

I’m placing this in the classified blog because the present news headlines are loosely related a random week in history I know about and find interesting. It’s some kind of bizarre random rhetorical/historical kairos.

First our present times in this first half of March 2025 had several major news events. Setting aside Ukraine and Russia and America and NATO. There’s other history going on.

Keep in mind a lot of this is Trump’s doing because he has had plans for tariffs for a awhile, others are not part of his plan but someone else’s like the start of the baseball season, or Trump’s birthday being on a June 14. It’s not like unborn Donald Trump got to pick his own birthday but that has relevance to the older week in history I will write later in this blog.

Trump also is arguing the borders between Canada and the USA are illegitimate. This is one of the more clever arguments he’s ever made, but I don’t think he knows enough history to be saying that.

Is there some kind of legal argument to be made that the border between the USA and Canada along the 49th parallel is illegitimate because it wasn’t made between the USA and Canada when Canada was a sovereign place and therefore its government isn’t legitimate???

no.

but do I know random history about Canada to make some stupid argument about it being a fake country and it being more or less a British colony… yes.

But the proper protocol for that conversation would be for the head of state of Canada to have a conversation with the head of state of America about Canadas sovereignty. Luckily the head of state of Canada recently sent his prime minister to deliver a letter to the American head of state to invite him to London.

So when Trump goes to visit the King of England, there might actually be a legit job of statecraft the King of England might actually need to do. Which is to use his English (King’s English) to politely but sternly inform the American President that Canada’s sovereignty exists because his parliament has made it so over a series of acts and proclamations by his mother and former Queen.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. Theres  a week back in 1846 that had similar issues as to today.

In late May/Early June of 1846 three somewhat important random events on different parts of the world happened simultaneously. Completely disconnected from each other.

  1. John C Fremont and his corp of American troops began hearing news that the Americans in CA were becoming disgruntled with the Mexican rulers in the town of Sonoma. He was a few hundred miles away up near the Klamath region along the 42nd parallel.
  2. A pope died in Rome.
  3. The UK and the USA began to negotiate the Oregon territory treaty deciding where the boundaries of British Columbia and the USA would be.
  4. Alexander Cartwright who developed new rules for a sport was about to organize a game between some Wall Street bankers and some other guys. They needed a new venue because they kept breaking windows playing a version of cricket in Madison Square Garden.
  5. Mariano Vallejo’s son a young child died in the town of Sonoma.

Then everything sort of happened in mid June.

on June 14 the Americans in Sonoma decided to use the distraction of the young child’s death to their advantage and overthrow Mariano Vallejo and raise the Bear Flag of CA. John C Fremont assisted in this minor rebellion and did so in direct opposition to his standing orders to not intervene in Mexican territorial affairs. He got court marshaled.

Also in Rome on June 14 a conclave occurred and they picked Pope Pius IX. He lasted for 32 years and was an important Pope in history, convening the first Vatican council, giving up the Papal States, declaring the immaculate conception which settled centuries of debate among priests, bishops, cardinals about rather Mary was free from sin or not.

but history knows him best bear he put fig leaves on the nude parts of the statues in the Vatican museums, which we all know from watching Angels and Deamons.

but back to June 1846.

The next day, June 15 1846 the UK and the USA signed the Oregon territory treaty. Establishing the borders between Washington and British Columbia Canada.

The treaty was signed thousands of miles away in Washington District of Columbia.

On June 18th the US Senate Ratified the treaty making it official.

The next day on June 19th 1846, in Hoboken New Jersey at Elysian field Alexander Cartwright was umpire in the first game of baseball using more or less the modern rules. This is the correct first game of baseball.

In our present times there’s a sick pope in the hospital.

problems between the USA and Canada.

And Opening Day of America’s favorite Past Time.

i can’t help but think history today is oddly randomly similar to the history of mid June 1846.
