While at UNC he edited the Daily Tar Heel. He first gained interest in journalism when living in Washington D.C. while his father Josephus served as President Wilson's Secretary of the Navy. In this look at the South Daniels is a supporter of FDR's Democratic liberal agenda in rebuilding the South. It was well received by the public but criticized as too weak on racism.
