Fort Ross California has a fascinating history.  California was founded by the system of 21 California  Missions stretching from San Diego to Sonoma CA. 
 
The Final Mission was meant to stop Russian Aggression into the SF Bay and to keep an eye out on the Russian American Fur Company at Fort Ross in case they had plans to expand their territory beyond the fort. 
 
The Russians are the only European Power to ever grant civil liberties to a Native American Tribe and were some of the first Europeans on the West Coast and Pacific Northwest. 
 
Fort Ross was the on the southern portion of their trading routes to Alaska and served as a small farm to supply food to their sailors in Sitka and in the Pacific Northwest. 
 
The company eventually folded when the demand for beaver fur and seal fur went away and the fort was sold to the founder of Sacramento John Sutter. 
 
This is a lost and forgotten piece of California History but also fascinating to learn about.  It's the history we Californians were not taught about in the 4th grade.
