One thing I learned by reading the plaques and cards at the historical places in Rome is that for many many centuries of Rome almost nobody cared about history or restoring history.  The colleseum was an abondoned ruin that was almost torn down for marble, then it was occupied for a few centuries by squatters and a whole bunch of people as some kind of homeless shelter that also included a church, until finally only a few hundred years ago a family purchased the building and began to restore it. 
 
The same sort of thing is true for the Forum, for centuries the ruins were just popping up out of the ground but the people were using the land to graze cattle and grow grapes.  It wasn't until the 1700's that a family decideded the uncover the history and begin doing some archeology of the area.  
 
But if you do the math, Rome ended around 400 and it wasn't until around 1700 that people began to dig up the area and do some archeology and historic preservation work.  So for about 1300 years nobody in Rome cared about history at all. (except for some Popes who financed archeological digs in Rome to stuff their museums with artifacts and statues, some of those digs date back to the 1500's.) 
 
Which means that not only is the Colleseum and the Forum the birthplace of Western civilization, it is also the birthplace of the science of archeology.
