This is a public domain image I have slightly cropped and edited in photoshop to my own liking. 

The painter who originally was from Norway worked with a wealthy New Yorker to concieve the idea of painting Grant on a horse flanked by all of his top generals.  The original painting which is in the National Portrait Gallery is almost life sized.  

To accomplsih this feet the painter traveled to encampents all across the country to get real life drawings of Grant and his Generals.  Grant was very accomodating in this request.
