I took this one from a boat in Lake Washington.

 

One of the odd quircks of goegraphy about Lake Washington is that just to the North is the town of Kirkland Washington.  Costco has made famous the name Kirkland by making a household name for countless numbers of people in this country.  Costco's headquarters is also in the Seattle area and they took the name from town. 

 

Also not that far south of the University of Washington is the headquarters of Boeing and even though UPS is headquarted in Atlanta it began in the Seattle.

 

Then ofcourse in every airport there is a Starbucks which also began in Seattle as well as Amazon.

 

I found a book on the founding of the town of Seattle and learned that it has always been and probably always will be a town of creativity and business.  The history of Seattle began with two families who risked everything to find a small bay they were told about by a beaver trapper while traveling along the Oregon Trail. 

 

One night a captain of a ship who was getting timber from Russians in Alaska sailed into the bay to try to find some free logs that may have washed into the bay.  He noticed a fire and two log cabins near one shore and informed them that San Francisco was going through a boom and was in desperate need for a consistent source of timber.  The Gold Rush was so powerful that people were burning their ships in the bay and heading straight to the Sierra Nevadas.  The Captain ordered a ship of timber and told them he would be back in a couple months. The guys knew absolutey nothing about logging but figured it out and had the order ready in 2 months.  The Captain paid for the load and said that he would spread the word in San Francisco. 

 

Next thing you know there were dozens of people showing up in Seattle who failed to find gold but thought they could make money cutting down trees and starting a business in a new boomtown in what later became the state of Washington.  The beginnings of the Seattle Spirit were in many ways rooted in the failures of Gold Rush entrepuenuers from California.
