The Bay Bridge in San Francisco is a bridge that connects San Francisco to Oakland. It was first built in 1936 as a way to relieve traffic congestion on the older and more famous Golden Gate Bridge. The Bay Bridge was designed by chief engineer Joseph Strauss and was considered an engineering marvel at the time, due to its size and the difficult conditions in which it was constructed. The Bay Bridge was damaged during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, but was quickly repaired and remains an essential transportation link in the Bay Area today.
