Christmas has been monopolized over the last couple centuries. In the centuries prior to the 19th Christmas was celebrated as a time of the birth of Jesus and the Nativity. 

We still measure time based on the birth of Christ. Anno Domini which is what A.D stands for means "In the Year of our Lord" a common misconception is that it is reference to the Crucifixion which happened when Jesus was about 35. Ofcourse B.C stands for Before Christ. 

These are common understandings of how we can measure time both in the secular and religious world.  There are other less religious forms of referencing AD and BC as B.C.E and A.C.E which stand for "Common Era." The years are the same but the words change and it still is a way of measuring a distance in time from the birth of Jesus. Also it began being adopted 100 years ago by the Jewish community and Jesus was ofcourse a Jew.

Christmas even in the commercial sense of the Holiday still marks the end of the year and the birth of a new year. We still give gifts to our loved ones and friends which is what the 3 wise men did in the story of the Nativity.  The Gregorian calandar which we use today was created by religious scholars and Jesuit monks.
