National Cheerleading Day – Celebrate the Spirit of Cheer!

Every year on September 14th, National Cheerleading Day honors the athleticism, spirit, and teamwork of cheerleading. This lively celebration recognizes the dedication of cheerleaders, who uplift others through their cheers, stunts, and routines.

Cheerleading in the United States dates back to 1869, when the first organized cheer, “Sis Boom Bah,” was performed during the inaugural football game between Rutgers and Princeton. Almost 30 years later, in 1898, the first recognized cheerleader, Johnny Campbell, led a crowd at the University of Minnesota with the chant, “Rah, Rah, Rah! Ski-u-mah, Hoo-Rah! Hoo-Rah! Varsity! Varsity! Varsity, Minn-e-So-Tah!” This moment marked the beginning of organized cheerleading as we know it today.

In 1923, women officially joined the ranks of cheerleading at the University of Minnesota, paving the way for generations of female cheerleaders to inspire and energize their teams.
