Somerset Maugham's greatest work; made into three films: Of Human Bondage directed by John Cromwell (1934) starring Leslie Howard as Philip Carey and Bette Davis as Mildred Rogers. This film launched Betty Davis into Hollywood stardom. Remakes were made in 1946 directed by Edmund Goulding and 1964 directed by Ken Hughes starring Laurence Harvey as Philip and Kim Novak as Mildred.; William Somerset Maugham was born at the British Embassy in Paris, France on Jan. 25, 1874 and died on Dec. 16, 1965 in Nice, France.
