He is a simple man with little education that falls in love with a sophisticated well educated lady. The novel is devoted to his determination to win her love as they both, during their courtship, grow closer to one another by helping their freinds and family overcome their own prejudices with their progressive loving ways.; The author Alice Hegan Rice gained fame and notoriety through her 1901 novel Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch made into plays and four Hollywood movies. The most famous movie was made in 1934 directed by Norman Taurog starring Pauline Lord, W.C. Fields, and Zazu Pitts.; small stain on main fore edge; a pencil inscription on the front free endpaper reads, "To Patsy from Dad-- Oct 19 -- 21".
