It was also a time of heightened anti-homosexuality in America. The Grotto was for its time a daring novel to write and publish because Grace Zaring Stone explores the subject of a mother's concern and fears that her son is homosexual. Celia Thorne and her teenage son Evan become stranded in Italy due to a ship strike. An old friend Wilfred Foliot offers her and Evan to stay at a coastal villia with him until the strike is settled. She gladly accepts and while spending time at the villa she contemplates the possibility and accepts that Evan is gay.
