He was a Socialist that devoted much of his writing to social justice and gained a reputation as a muckraker for exposing ills in the social, industrial, and political life in America. His novel, The Jungle (1906), exposed the meat-packing industry for health inspection violations that led to, a few months later, the passage of the The Pure Food and Drug Act (1906); and The Meat Inspection Act (1906) by U.S. Congress. Eight Hollywood movies were made from his many novels. The most famous were The Jungle (1914) directed by George Irving and Jack Pratt starring Upton Sinclair, George Irving, Gail Kane, and Julia Hurley. There Will Be Blood (2007) directed by Paul Thomas Anderson starring Daniel Day-Lewis as Daniel Plainview.
